What to Expect in the First Trimester

August 12, 2025

Congratulations on your pregnancy!

Pregnancy can be filled with emotions of joy, anxiety, nervousness and excitement. Many changes are happening daily – even if you don’t yet see or feel them. During the first trimester, the human body works overtime to grow new life which is why it can be the hardest trimester for some.

In this trimester, several major organs begin to develop for baby and you may begin to feel some hormonal changes. In fact, your body produces more estrogen during one pregnancy than it does during your entire life when you are not pregnant. This is why you may have symptoms of breast tenderness, nausea or vomiting, bloating, fatigue and more. The first

trimester lasts until the end of the 13th week of pregnancy. By then, your baby will have fingers and toes and will have fully functioning urinary and digestive systems.

It is important to contact your OB/GYN as soon as you find out you’re a pregnant.

SUSPENSION OF ELECTIVE SURGERIES AND PROCEDURES

Hospitals across the country are changing the way care is delivered to prevent COVID-19 exposure to patients, staff and physicians. Iberia Medical Center continues to take a proactive approach to addressing the rapidly changing environment regarding the protection of the hospital and the community. "Hospital leadership and our physicians continue to receive daily guidance from the Louisiana Department of Health and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).  Our hospital and community preparedness is our top priority as we plan for the immediate future healthcare needs under these current circumstances,” states Dionne Viator, Iberia Medical Center CEO.

Today, the Louisiana Department of Health issued a directive to all hospitals in the state to suspend all scheduled/elective surgeries and procedures. This will go into effect immediately.

Iberia Medical Center will continue to perform urgent and emergency surgeries. Physicians, with guidance from IMC Surgical Services, will ultimately be responsible for the determination of whether the procedure or surgery is urgent or an emergency, and what is in the best interest of the patient.
