Iberia Medical Center Recognized for Newborn Hearing Screenings
Maternal/Child Unit achieves 100 percent rate
Iberia Medical Center was recently recognized for having achieved 100% for infant hearing screening for 2024. Each year, Iberia Medical Center reports data to the Louisiana Department of Health’s Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (LA EHDI) program. The LA EHDI follows national benchmarks for hearing screening no later than 1 month of age, diagnosis no later than 3 months of age for infants who did not pass the screening, and enrollment in early intervention services no later than 6 months of age for those identified as deaf or hard-of-hearing.
The statewide average in Louisiana for screening newborns prior to hospital discharge during 2024 was 99.42% with a national benchmark of 98.00%. This screening rate recognizes the percentage of infants with initial hearing screening completed prior to hospital discharge, or by 1 month of age as an outpatient. Iberia Medical Center has exceeded all benchmarks and Louisiana 's average ratings across the scorecard.

The LA EHDI program supports Louisiana Birthing Facilities, such as Iberia Medical Center, to ensure families of babies and children who are deaf or hard-of-hearing receive appropriate and timely services. These services include hearing screening, diagnosis, early intervention and family-to-family support. The goal of the EHDI program and Iberia Medical Center is to optimize language, literacy, cognitive, social, and emotional development.
