Iberia Medical Center Raises the Flag for Organ Donor Awareness Month - Thursday, April 17, 2014
Iberia Medical Center raised a flag on its campus to recognize April as Organ Donor Awareness Month.  Representatives of Louisiana Organ Procurement Association (LOPA) and Southern Eye Bank joined members of the hospital to educate the community on the importance of organ, eye and tissue donation.  "Everyone has a story to tell about someone who is, or has been a donor or a recipient, whose life has been changed or saved by the generosity of a donor," commented Parker Templeton, Chief Executive Officer of Iberia Medical Center.  "Iberia Medical Center is proud to stand here today with LOPA and DEB to recognize both donors and recipients with a pledge to spread awareness of the work these organizations do to assist in providing what truly is a gift of life at a critical time for a patient.:
   Each day, 79 Americans receive life-saving organ transplants and thousands more benefit from cornea and tissue transplants.  These extraordinary gifts have been generously donated by ordinary people of all ages and backgrounds who took just a few minutes in a busy day to indicate their decisions to become organ and tissue donors.  Broader awareness for the need for organ, eye and tissue donation is critical.  There are more than 114,000 people awaiting an organ transplant in the united States, ad each wkke more than 100 people on the national trnasplant waiting list die because no organ is available.  In Louisiana, there are 1,836 people waiting for an organ transplant.  Here are some additional facts about organ, eye and tissue donation:
  • One organ donor can save as many as eiht lives and improeve many more thorugh eye and tissue donation.
  • Organ transplants have been successfully saving lives for more than 50 years.
  • Cornea transplants have been successfully restoring sight for more than 100 years.
  • Donated tissues such as skin, bone and heart valves can dramatically improve the quality of life for recipients, and even save lives.
  • Anyone can be a potential donor regardless of age, race or medical history.
  • More than 100 million people in the United States have registered their decision to donate.
